Job Description
Research Associate – Statistical Genetics

Location: Woodland, CA

Monsanto is currently seeking a Research Associate to join the Statistical/Quantitative Genetics Team within the Vegetable Seeds Division located in Woodland, CA. The successful candidate will be primarily responsible for supporting the on-site Statistical Geneticist in analyzing and developing statistical and computational tools for building genetic maps and conducting QTL-mapping in a variety of vegetable crop species. Specifically, the selected applicant will also be responsible for data management, data formatting, quality control and data curation. This is a multi-disciplinary position where, in addition to the Statistical Geneticist, the Research Associate will have the opportunity to work alongside talented scientists in the Trait Genetics, Trait Discovery, and Marker Discovery Teams. Your work will contribute to the development of vegetable hybrids that improve nutrition, boost crop yields, limit spoilage and reduce the need of chemicals. Responsibilities include:

  • Support the on-site Statistical Geneticist
  • Data formatting, data management, data curation, and quality control
  • Run and possibly modify existing scripts and programs for quantitative genetics analysis
  • Documenting and reporting methodologies and guidelines for linkage and genetic mapping pipelines

  • Requirements
    Required Skills/Experience:
  • BS with 2+ years of experience in Biostatistics, Statistics, Quantitative Genetics, or Computational Biology
  • Strong statistical and/or analytical skills
  • Programming and/or scripting skills in one or more languages commonly used in genetics research, such as R, Perl, SAS, or other similar languages
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work independently, to multi-task, and to adapt to a fast-paced and dynamic work environment

    Desired Skills/Experience:

  • MS in Plant Breeding, Genetics, or related field of study
  • Good knowledge of quantitative genetics theory and experimental design as applied to plant breeding
  • Ability to execute command-line programs either in Linux or a Linux-like environment
  • Experience with web application development skills
  • Experience with software applications such as JoinMap, QTL Cartographer, JMP and/or SAS, mapQTL, Genestat, or similar software
