The Department of Statistical and Actuarial Sciences, in the School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences, Faculty of Science at Western University is pleased to announce a search for a probationary (tenure-track) position in Data Science at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor . The rank and salary will be commensurate with the successful applicant’s qualifications and experience. The starting date will be 01 July 2018.
The appointment will be in the Department of Statistical & Actuarial Sciences, and is expected to build on strengths at Western in the interface of statistics and its related fields together with the development of scientific methods to extract knowledge and insights from data in various forms and capabilities. The Science of Information (SoI) is a priority research theme in the Faculty of Science, and Data Science is a particular research and teaching focus. This position complements the Tier I Canada Research Chair in Data Science, currently being advertised, to further solidify the Faculty’s SoI-theme efforts.
The successful candidate will be expected to teach and provide leadership for the new undergraduate Data Science program of the Department and also get actively involved in the Faculty of Science’s Data Analytics professional graduate program. The successful candidate will be an outstanding and innovative researcher whose accomplishments are internationally recognised for having made a major impact in their field as evidenced by influential publications in top-tier international journals, including research publications related to data science/analytics such as, but not limited to, the following: Bayesian modeling, spatial/spatio-temporal analysis, statistical analysis/calibration of computer models, statistical learning, visualization and analysis of high-dimensional data. As an emerging leader, the successful candidate must have proven success in obtaining external funding. In addition to possessing excellent communication skills, it is essential that the successful candidate has a superior record of attracting and supervising graduate students and postdoctoral fellows; developing and delivering timely, high-quality graduate and undergraduate courses; and providing leadership in research, interdisciplinary scholarship as well as increasing knowledge mobilisation and societal benefits. Distinct assets would include teaching experience in data science/analytics programs, experience with professional graduate programs, and demonstrated successes as a team member on multidisciplinary research projects.
The Department of Statistical and Actuarial Sciences (www.uwo.ca/stats) offers an exceptional environment for interdisciplinary research, teaching, and training in statistics and its applications. It has undergraduate and graduate programs in financial modelling, actuarial science and statistics supported by 23 faculty members. The Department is actively involved in a new professional Masters of Data Analytics program hosted by the Faculty of Science and is the home department for new undergraduate program modules in Data Science, both of which are mounted in close collaboration with the Department of Computer Science. It is also involved in a collaborative professional Masters in Financial Economics program jointly offered with Economics, Law, and Business and a Collaborative Program in Biostatistics mounted together with the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics in the Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry.
The Department is one of the three independent departments together with a research unit constituting the newly formed School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences. The School aims to make Western the place to be for study and research in Applied Mathematics, Mathematics, and the Statistical & Actuarial Sciences in the 21st century.
