The Department of Statistics & Data Science together with the Yale Quantitative Biology Institute seeks applicants for a faculty appointment in the area of biological image analysis. Applications will be considered for a position at any level—Assistant Professor, Associate Professor or Full Professor. The anticipated start date is July 1, 2018.
Over the last decade, there has been revolutions in microscopy, resulting in large increases in resolution, as well as techniques to visualize, in three dimensions, structures ranging in size from single molecules to whole organisms. There has also been rapid development of new probes for dynamic and functional imaging of electrical and chemical activity in cells, tissues and bacterial communities. As a consequence of the explosion in the amount of image data, image analysis has become a rate limiting step for scientific discoveries, and the extraction of information from biological images poses new challenges in statistics, mathematics and computer science. We are looking for an individual who is excited by these challenges and whose primary appointment would be in the Department of Statistics & Data Science, with a possible joint appointment in one of the biology departments at Yale: Molecular Biophysics & Biochemistry; Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology; or Ecology & Evolutionary Biology. The candidate’s group will be located in the Quantitative Biology Institute, in the new Yale Science Building under construction on Science Hill. Several additional positions in the Quantitative Biology Institute are anticipated.
The Department of Statistics & Data Science together with the newly established Yale Quantitative Biology Institute offer a dynamic and interactive community of biologists, working on a wide range of topics ranging from molecular function, cell and tissue biology, to population and evolutionary biology, and using a wide range of techniques including cryoEM, light microscopy, genetic and proteomic tools and computational approaches. There is also a very strong community of applied mathematicians, theoretical physicists, statisticians, data scientists and computer scientists working on a wide range of biological questions.
The successful candidate is expected to establish an active research group, be an interactive member of the faculty, and contribute to the teaching program at the undergraduate and graduate levels in the interdisciplinary area of Quantitative Biology. Communication skills conducive to excellence in interdisciplinary research and teaching are necessary.
