The Data CoE has been in existence for over 2 years with the mission to improve R&D decision making through the better use of its data. The group has concentrated on start-up fundamentals including Infrastructure build, Platform delivery, team set-up and early value delivery through use cases. The focus now is driving implementation so we can maximise the effective use of new tools and the available data by users across all of R&D from those reporting the data, those conducting data discovery through to experts in data and computational science. This will require individuals with leadership qualities, an appreciation of the value of data and the ability to drive the embedding of new ways of working. What is the Esprit Data Use, Statistician R&D Leadership Programme?

The Esprit Leadership programmes overall goal is to support, stretch, develop and deliver leaders of the future. You will build your breadth of experience and leadership capabilities through accelerated development rotations. The use of data and analytics across the R&D organization has become a critical imperative in the transformation of our business. GSK's R&D Data Centre of Excellence (CoE) group is leading the path for innovative data management and was recently recognized with the ‘Rookie of the Year' Data Impact Award by Cloudera, Inc. Mark Ramsey, SVP and Chief R&D Data Officer, has been leading the CoE since mid-2015 to bring efficiencies to three areas in R&D including big data platform builds; innovation and incubation; and data science and analytics. So far, they are delivering ground-breaking technology in a single data platform that will give GSK scientists access to data like never before. "We were not taking full advantage of the vast amount of data generated throughout R&D because it was in silos and difficult to access," said Ramsey. "We essentially collected more than 10 years of biological data regardless of when, how, and where it was generated, then bundled it into a single, central platform. Scientists now have the information at their fingertips and can quickly search data in a couple of mouse clicks."
How does the Esprit Data Leadership programme work? The vision is for GSK to be at the leading edge in the use of data to drive decisions. There are three entry points into the Esprit Data programme (1) Data Strategy (2) Data usage (3) Statisticians. Applicants should choose the entry point that best fits their qualifications and experience. You will then spend 3 years on a fast track rotational development programme, working your way towards a potential Senior leadership role. Beginning in UK or US, you will have 3 rotations, which may include international experience (not mandatory). Through challenging rotations, you will gain in-depth experience across different areas which could include the Data Centre of Excellence, Real World Data & Analytics and Clinical Statistics*. Is the Esprit Data Use, Statistician development programme for you?
The use of data and analytics across the R&D organization has become a critical imperative in the transformation of our business. We are searching for talented and effective statisticians who would relish the opportunity to join GSK and work in a new exploratory data mining role. This role would sit within the broader Clinical Statistics team which supports all Phase 1-4 clinical drug development, but would be focused on exploratory data analysis of the new internal clinical trial repository recently created, which hosts a wealth of clinical trial data from across all our therapy areas over the past ten years. Qualifications include a MS / PhD (preferred) in statistics/ or related field with experience within Life Science Industry or related experience. You have a strong ability to demonstrate statistical leadership within clinical trial statistics and pharmaceutical R&D You will have a proven ability of statistical input to the design, analysis, reporting and interpretation of clinical studies Proven ability to influence, communicate and negotiate with all levels of management across functional and business unit boundaries for multiple statistical delivery programs. Strong Business Acumen in-order to understand the implications of decisions from a broad business perspective and use this knowledge to influence decision-making at the highest levels of R&D. You will have a robust capability in Statistics so to act as a key influencer with senior internal and external stakeholders and so change statistical practices within business partners to adapt innovative approaches High level of demonstrated competency in using relevant systems and statistical software (e.g., R, SAS, Python) to effectively execute key, strategic analytical questions posed by R&D colleagues of GSK’s newly built clinical trials repository Act a change champion & collaborator to support the strategic leadership of the statistics department regarding how the statistics department and the broader R&D organisation can capitalise on this new pooled data source, and to ensure fit for purpose, cutting edge analytical tools are in place and can be readily accessed Capable of building relationships to operate effectively in a range of external settings, such as working with co-development partners, consulting with external experts to deliver on data mining-related business needs Excellent oral & written communication and presentation skills, with the ability to communicate complexed statistical methods simply, at all levels of the organisation.
