The University of Nevada, Reno invites applications for the position of Chair, Department of Mathematics and Statistics. The successful applicant may also be eligible for an endowed professorship. We seek a dynamic individual with demonstrated leadership abilities who will build on departmental strengths, recruit outstanding faculty, promote scholarly initiatives – especially in terms of externally supported grant efforts – and be an advocate to both internal University and external constituencies. The area of specialization within the discipline is open. In 2017, the Department launched two Ph.D. programs – one in Mathematics and one in Statistics and Data Science. Interested candidates are expected to champion the development of these new programs, with special emphasis on recruiting graduate students and promoting their success.
The Department has ~25 graduate students and more than 100 majors, and it is home to a dynamic group of over 20 graduate faculty with diverse interests and expertise in Pure and Applied Mathematics, Probability and Statistics. UNR and the Reno community provide ample opportunities for interdisciplinary research collaborations, consulting, and internships with organizations, such as the Desert Research Institute, Nevada Advanced Autonomous Systems Innovation Center, the Nevada Center for Applied Research, the InNEVation Center (powered by Switch), Apple’s and Switch’s Data Centers, and the recently established Tesla Gigafactory.
The University of Nevada, Reno has a growing and increasingly diverse student enrollment of approximately 21,000 including over 2,700 graduate students. The university has been recognized as a Tier 1 institution by US News and World Report. Located at the picturesque base of the Sierra Nevada, the university is a 45 minute drive from Lake Tahoe and 4 hours from San Francisco and the Napa-Sonoma wine country. Reno has been rated one of the best small cities in the US for outdoor recreation and overall quality of life. The city offers an excellent living environment, due to its mountains, short commutes, growing arts community, and its increasingly international flavor.
Required Qualifications: The Chair must be familiar with and supportive of the general education mission of a Mathematics and Statistics department across a typical university campus, as well as have a commitment to undergraduate and graduate education. Applicants must have a PhD, a scholarly record meriting appointment as a full professor, and a record of relevant administrative or leadership experience. Applicants must be able to communicate effectively both within the department and with the University constituencies with which the department interacts.
Preferred Qualifications: The ideal candidate will be active in the mathematical sciences profession, knowledgeable about diverse career paths, and able to prepare highly-qualified undergraduates for graduate and professional schools and PhD graduates for successful academic and industry careers.
