The Social Security Administration’s (SSA) Office of Retirement and Disability Policy (ORDP) /Office of Research, Evaluation and Statistics (ORES), produces essential information on the effects of SSA programs and the interactions among these programs; other government programs; and economic, social, and demographic forces.
Our core activities fall within three integrally related focus areas:
Research and Evaluation activities by internal and external social science experts,
Data and Statistics development and maintenance, and
Dissemination of our work to the public.
Since FY 2009, the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), has designated ORES as a principal Federal Statistical Agency, recognizing that our primary activities include the collection, compilation, and analysis of information for statistical and research purposes.
Incumbent is responsible for conducting a variety of mathematical/statistical studies and procedures related to the planning, execution, and control of an extensive program of statistical research and service in the broad field of Social Security statistics.

At the GS-13 Level –
Participates in initiating, formulating, and planning major statistical studies requiring the application and development of mathematical statistical theory.
Plans, executes, and controls assigned comprehensive mathematical statistical projects related to sample design, quality control, statistical methodology, and statistical standards.
Provides computer programming expertise in research projects concerned with survey sampling, statistical data analysis, modeling techniques, linear programming, and variance estimation using replication methodology.
Modifies and implements computerized algorithms to prevent the disclosure of information related to individuals while insuring maximum reliability of data produced for program statistics.
Advises the supervisor and professional staff on mathematical statistical matters relative to all areas of responsibility.
Performs research concerning new and complex mathematical statistical techniques as well as developing and adapting methods for subject-matter experts.
Prepares technical reports, guidelines, or instructions to enable statisticians and others to understand and/or apply recommended techniques.
Exercises technical direction and provides assistance for special projects as assigned.
Materially assists in training and developing the staff through consultation on progressively more difficult studies and projects, review and discussion of work products, and guidance on new or complex studies and projects.
Formulates the instructions and guides to be used by the professional and technical assistants working on assignments within the subject matter area.
Is responsible for the statistical reliability and validity of work products and the soundness of judgments rendered in making evaluations and recommendations, and the documentation of significant project actions and procedures.
At the GS-14 Level –
Initiates, plans, and conducts innovative research in mathematical statistics and data analysis, including analyses of sample survey data, classification and discrimination problems, multivariate analysis, analysis of count data, stochastic models for social, economic and administrative systems and design and?analysis of experiments and sampling programs in administrative and operational systems.
Devises statistical techniques, computer techniques, sampling procedures, experimental procedures, and related statistical measures for isolating, identifying and measuring quantitatively the relationships among the key sociologic, medical, economic, operational, administrative or quality control factors that affect results obtained in the administration of social security programs.
As an expert mathematical statistician and computer scientist, provides expertise in the experimental design and analysis of data from research projects related to socio?medical, economic, operational, administrative or quality control investigations and studies.
In concert with program and administrative objectives and policies, plans and conducts a program of research, study, and analysis designed to measure actual results in relation to objectives established for administration of social security programs.
Explores the potential of new technological development to improve the operational processes of the Administration; tests policies for their adequacy in attaining desired operating objectives, and to examine interrelationships among program areas of the Social Security Administration.
Initiates, plans, and conducts basic research studies in mathematical model development, numerical analysis, and the creation of original algorithmic procedures.
Provides guidance and consultative services in the concrete formulation of statistical problems and in the design of unusually complex statistical systems. When necessary, supervises the conduct of special tests, experiments, and pilot studies.
Publishes results of research and studies in comprehensive reports, analytical notes, and in a variety of reports for use of top officials within the Administration and for the community of scholars.
