Major Duties and Responsibilities for DIRECTOR ROLE:
DIRECT RESEARCH - Lead large or complex late phase project(s). Provide leadership, direction, and overall administration for the development, coordination, and implementation of scientific research and service programs undertaken and provided by the IHSI Illinois Biostatistics Core. Encourage, foster, and develop collaborative research, service, outreach efforts, and relationships with the University of Illinois administration, community, and its stakeholders and external constituents. Identify cutting-edge research foci and other multi-disciplinary research themes related to Illinois Biostatistics Core. Encourage, promote, and facilitate research; establish and maintain productive collaborations with vendors and project teams, including data management, statistical programming, clinical research, and corporate partners. Act as a subject matter expert in biostatistics and statistical leadership in the design of clinical development plans.
STAFF ADMINISTRATION - Directly supervise Core staff, with responsibility for setting and implementing operational policies and procedures for handling daily administrative matters, such as finances, facilities, and staffing. Interact with all staff to solicit feedback and to become aware of issues, concerns, and effectiveness in providing biostatistical service. Determine the Core’s complement of staff to meet the needs of the Core. Supervise the team members in study design, statistical analysis, and reporting of data. Mentor people working on the project by promoting teamwork, quality, and innovation. Create a productive work environment. Provide professional development, performance appraisals, and employee counseling to staff. Assign project work and review workload for all direct reports.
RESEARCH ADMINISTRATION - Participate in IHSI leadership, effectively representing the interests of IBC to IHSI, and advise ISHI Director and other leaders regarding matters pertinent to the mission of IBC. Primary responsibility for day to day biostatistical activities of the Core. Participate in planning of evaluation activities to improve Core services (e.g., consultation feedback forms). Coordinate and facilitate organizational and educational program planning. Ensure team members contribute to development strategies for the assigned projects/studies that are aligned to the organizational goals, including innovative and relevant statistical designs, statistical expertise for regulatory documents and for key decisions and scientific communications. Plan and track project activities, timelines, and resource use. Seek to optimize resource utilization thru efficient and well-managed resource allocation and across projects or areas.
Major Duties and Responsibilities for SENIOR RESEARCH BIOSTATISTICAN ROLE:
Provide leadership for the Illinois Biostatistics Core, including establishing organizational goals, assigning projects, and ensuring the quality of all project deliverables, as well as statistical outputs and analysis. Ensure productive collaborations with clients of the Core and effective communication with IHSI leadership. Provide expert statistical consulting for complex studies using the appropriate methods and computation or graphical software. This includes consulting on and/or producing outputs related to study design, sample size calculations, and statistical analysis for grant proposals, manuscripts, and publications requiring biostatistical expertise. Supervise and mentor Core biostatisticians, including promoting teamwork, quality, and innovation. Ensure the team utilizes and maintains consistent analytical approaches and reporting formats within and across studies. Create a productive, customer-focused work environment. 15% Assign and track project activities, timelines, and resources. Research and apply new statistical procedures as needed. Maintain current knowledge of novel biostatistical methods and software that advances clinical/translational research. Prepare and conduct training/classes/outreach for the Biostatistical Core clients. Prepare and provide lectures for Illinois undergraduate and graduate classes upon request of faculty.
Qualifications for DIRECTOR ROLE:
Education: Required: PhD plus eight years of experience in scientific research, or Master's degree plus ten or more years' experience in scientific research. Alternate degrees or degree fields and combination of degree and experience will be considered depending upon breadth and depth of experience and education/coursework as it relates to the position.
Experience: Required: With Master's degree: 10 or more years of experience in statistical consulting or related field. With PhD: 8 or more years of experience in statistical consulting or related field.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Demonstrated leadership, project management, and interpersonal/communication skills. Broad knowledge and superior understanding of advanced statistical concepts and techniques. Comprehensive knowledge of clinical trials methodology, statistics and statistical software packages, including SAS. Experience with protocol development, clinical study reporting, ISS/ISE requirements, and regulatory submissions in paper and electronic format is essential. Ability to translate clinical study designs into statistical practice and educate study team members in the use of statistics. Strong interpersonal and communication skills (verbal and written) bridging scientific and business needs – integrating quantitative sciences, strong disease area knowledge and appropriate market/competitive intelligence. Excellent organizational skills and an ability to prioritize effectively to deliver results within aggressive timelines.
Qualifications for SENIOR BIOSTATISTICIAN ROLE:
Education: Required: PhD in applied statistics, biostatistics, or related fields.
Experience: Required: Minimum of 5 years of experience in statistical consulting or related field; this experience should demonstrate increasing levels of responsibility, including leadership and management. Strong background with standard and specialized approaches for graphical and numerical data summary and advanced methods including, but not limited to, longitudinal modeling, quantile regression, hierarchical linear modeling, and survival analysis. Extensive experience using statistical software and packages such as R, SAS, Stata, and SPSS. Experience and success working independently in conceptualizing research study design and conducting analysis of complex data.
Preferred: Experience working within a Biostatistics Core and/or Medical College or Medical Center. Experience with coordinating clinical trials. Strong experience and success with grant writing.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Demonstrated leadership and project management skills. Broad knowledge and superior understanding of advanced statistical concepts and techniques. Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills. Attention to detail. Effective communication, personal relations, organizational, and team work skills. Demonstrated ability to perform effectively in a diverse and fast-paced work environment consisting of multiple and changing priorities, with minimal supervision. Knowledge of general academic structure, as well as the ability to interface in a professional manner with a wide variety of internal and external constituents, including faculty, university administration, and physicians. Understanding of the National Institutes of Health’s research funding programs is preferred.
