The Department of Mathematics is in the final stages of developing a new option to the Master’s degree in statistics, scheduled to launch in the 2020-21 academic year. To support this program and the overall needs of the Department we invite applications for one tenure track Assistant Professorship in Statistics, to commence on August 19, 2020. Candidates must demonstrate an ability and commitment to teaching, mentoring, and working with a diverse student population. The Department of Mathematics is interested in candidates with evidence of strong research in any area of classical or modern statistics. Candidates must have a PhD before August 19, 2020 in Statistics or Biostatistics, or in Mathematics with a primary focus in statistics.
At time of appointment, the successful candidate, if not a U.S. citizen, must have authorization from the Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services to work in the United States.
A successful candidate is expected to maintain an active research program, teach appropriate statistics and mathematics courses at undergraduate and graduate levels, mentor and advise undergraduate and graduate students, and contribute to service in the department and at the university. The Department strives to continue to increase the research activity of its faculty and students, so faculty are expected to support this mission by seeking external funding for their research.
Screening of applications will begin on 11/24/2019. Full consideration will be given to candidates whose application arrived by this time. However, the positions will remain open until filled. As part of the screening procedure application materials will be accessible to all tenured and tenure track faculty of the Department of Mathematics.
Applicants must submit their application materials on-line via www.mathjobs.org or by mail to the address below. Complete applications must include the following:
• the AMS standard cover sheet
• a cover letter • a current curriculum vitae
• a short (no more than two pages) description of current and future research
• a short statement (no more than two pages) regarding the candidate’s teaching, in particular discussing (i) experience teaching courses in statistics and/or probability, if any, and (ii) the candidate’s ability to work with a diverse student population
• at least three, but no more than five, letters of recommendation. At least one letter should substantially address the teaching effectiveness and experience of the candidate.
In later phases of the search process, applicants may be requested to provide verification of terminal degrees, licenses and certificates.
