The Annals of Internal Medicine, flagship journal of the American College of Physicians (ACP) and one of the most widely cited and influential medical journals in the world, is seeking a Deputy Editor, Statistics to provide leadership of Annals’ statistical editorial team.
The Deputy Editor, Statistics will be a member of Annals’ Senior Editorial team who will participate in planning and executing strategic plans and will oversee the work of Annals’ team of Statistical Associate Editors to ensure the timeliness and quality of the journal’s statistical review processes. Primary responsibilities include:
Oversee Review Process
Assign new manuscripts to statisticians and work with Managing Editor each week to determine which statistician will be best suited to work on a particular manuscript.
Communicate with other statisticians and Deputy Editors to determine which revised manuscripts require further team discussion and determine plan for further action.
Communicate with all statisticians regarding timeliness, work volume, and consistency of reviews.
Work with Editors and statisticians on policies regarding statistical review and ways to improve the efficiency of our methods review process.
The Deputy Editor, Statistics will serve as the primary statistician for review and evaluation of a share of Annals manuscripts. This will include:
Critically read and evaluate assigned manuscripts in a timely fashion.
Review shall include attention to the study design, analysis of the data, and any component of the manuscript relevant to the validity of its conclusions.
Prepare comments for the manuscript authors and provide guidance on required changes.
Review the revisions of assigned manuscripts and determine if authors satisfactorily addressed concerns.
Review all subsequent revisions until manuscript is accepted for publication.
Participate in weekly Editors’ meetings.
Plan and lead a mini-statistical retreat each six to 12 months. The retreat will be a half-day meeting of Annals’ statistical Associate Editors and Senior Editors for the purpose of discussing issues for improving the review process and communications with authors.
Participate in the scheduling of upcoming issues of Annals and suggest articles which would benefit from editorials or are in need of statistical talking points.
Write or solicit editorials/commentaries on selected statistical / methodological topics.

The successful candidate will have PhD level training in biostatistics, at least five years experience in the statistical analysis of clinical trials or epidemiological studies, and experience providing editorial review for statistical issues at a medical journal.
