The Center for Data Science (CDS) and the Department of Biostatistics at the College of Global Public Health (GPH) seek candidates for an open rank joint faculty position, anticipated to begin September 2020. Faculty members are expected to be outstanding scholars and to participate in teaching at all levels from undergraduate to doctoral. Appointments may be made at either a junior or senior level.
CDS is the focal point for NYU’s university-wide initiative in data science and statistics, established 6 years ago, and one of the country’s leading data science research and training facilities. CDS is a vibrant space with 16 jointly appointed faculty (growing to over 20 in the next two years) and 11 associated faculty across computer science, mathematics, engineering, neuroscience, linguistics, politics, psychology, physics, biology and business; a list of affiliate faculty spanning a wide range of NYU’s schools and departments a highly successful Master’s program and one of the first Data Science PhD programs as well as the new undergraduate program in data science. CDS’s research focuses on tools and methods at the intersection between applied mathematics, data science, high-dimensional statistics, machine learning, optimization, and several data-driven application areas.
In recognition of the significance of the field of public health, GPH was formed in 2015, and is the newest college to be established at NYU. GPH was granted full accreditation by the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH) in June 2019. The Department of Biostatistics at NYU GPH is rapidly growing with 6 full-time faculty and 1 jointly appointed faculty, whose areas of expertise include (among many others) health disparities, longitudinal data, survival analysis, clinical trial design, and machine learning, and whose collaborations include several areas in public health and medicine. Its programs include an MPH (Master’s of Public Health) with a concentration in Biostatistics and an MS in Biostatistics; a proposed PhD concentration in Biostatistics is currently under development. We currently have 68 MPH and MS students in Biostatistics, and nearly 400 undergraduate co-majors in Public Health.
We seek to develop our strengths in biostatistical methods within the context of data science. We are particularly focused on expanding in the broad areas of public health and biomedical data science, in which the innovative and principled use of statistics is of vital importance.
A PhD in Statistics, Biostatistics, Computer Science, Mathematics, or a related quantitative field is required. Please include a CV, a short statement of your research and teaching interests, and a list of at least three references capable of providing a letter on your behalf. Applications and supporting documents received by December 10th, 2019 will receive full consideration.
