The Fariborz Maseeh Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Portland State University seeks a tenure-track faculty member to join a growing university-wide effort to develop its data scientific capacity. The position is at the level of Assistant Professor to begin in Fall 2020. A Ph.D. in mathematics, statistics or equivalent is required.

We invite applications from candidates with areas of expertise that include, but are not limited to, high dimensional statistics, machine learning, graph algorithms, numerical linear algebra, optimization, and inverse problems. Candidates should have a strong interest in challenging data science applications arising anywhere in natural and social sciences, engineering, medicine, and finance. A key requirement for the position is a strong commitment to undergraduate data science education by continuously bringing state-of-the-art advances of data science methodology into the teaching curriculum. The candidate is expected to develop and maintain a strong research program and actively pursue external funding. A proven ability to engage in interdisciplinary research at the intersection of advanced mathematical, statistical, and computational techniques, with interest in specific data science target applications are required. Also, their research is expected to contribute to the successful future growth of the data science program at the graduate level.
