| Assistant Professor - (FAC001659) Department Name: D0018 Mathematics and Statistics Description The University of Houston-Downtown invites applications for two tenure-track positions in Data Science or Statistics (or closely related fields) commencing in Fall 2021. The two positions will be at the Assistant Professor level and will be housed in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. The department (hosted by the College of Sciences and Technology) offers undergraduate degrees in Data Science, Mathematics, Applied Statistics, and a master’s degree in Data Analytics. For the first position, a PhD in Data Science/Statistics/Biostatistics/Optimization/Machine Learning or related field is required. For the second position, a PhD in Applied Mathematics/Computational Science (with Data Science emphasis) is preferred but other related fields will be considered. Successful candidates will have the opportunity to develop independent research or pursue other scholarly interests. Experience credits may be awarded to qualified candidates. Depending on qualifications, more experienced applicants may be considered for Associate Professor positions. The hires are expected to: - Teach Data Science and Statistics courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels in different formats including face-to-face, hybrid, online, and problem/project-based
- Mentor undergraduate and graduate student projects
- Teach R, Python, Julia, SQL, and other programming languages
- Lead in curriculum development
- Serve the university, profession, and community
- Collaborate with other members of the university and its affiliates
- Engage in scholarly activities
Qualifications Minimum Qualifications: - D degree in Data Science, Statistics, Biostatistics, Operations Research, Optimization, Machine Learning or related field for the first position
- D degree in Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Computational Science (with Data Science emphasis) or related field for the second position
- Proven experience with one or more of the following languages: R, Python, Julia, C++
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Evidence of research potential
Preferred Qualifications: - Teaching experience
- Experience in mentoring students
- Experience in working with first-generation college and non-traditional students
