The Department of Biostatistics at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health (BSPH) is seeking an outstanding colleague with emphasis on teaching and education to join our faculty. There is unprecedented opportunity for positive impact on emerging scientists and public health practitioners. Primary responsibilities are to partner in teaching the department’s large courses targeted to public health students and, ultimately, to lead a subset of these. Persons enthusiastic to innovate in teaching methodology and to advance educational knowledge are particularly sought. Scholars at the early and mid-career level are encouraged to apply.
While the current position emphasizes education, the department prides itself on providing flexibility and opportunity for career growth. If desired, the position can be structured to include a collaborative, consultative, or investigator-driven research component. The department features both “traditional”, classroom-based education and online education as well as educational outreach, for example through massive open online courses. Our faculty have a strong history of being leaders in developing innovative educational content in applied statistics and data science, in particular within the Johns Hopkins Data Science Lab (https://jhudatascience.org).
The BSPH is the nation’s oldest and largest school of public health, and it long has been ranked as the nation’s best. The Johns Hopkins Department of Biostatistics, founded in 1918, was the first degree-granting department of statistical science in the US and has ranked among the world’s best throughout its history. Today, the Department comprises 24 tenure track faculty members, 26 research track faculty, 15 postdoctoral fellows and 77 students, 42 seeking PhDs. Current areas of expertise are diverse, ranging from the real-time analysis of large, streaming data to philosophy and implementation of data science to statistical theory and methods. Qualified applicants will have a doctoral degree in biostatistics, statistics, or a related field. Individuals with a master degree and experience teaching statistics/biostatistics at the graduate (and/or undergraduate) level will also be considered. The rank of the appointment will be determined in accordance with the successful candidate’s experience and agreed portfolio of responsibilities.
