The Department of Statistics in the Division of Computing, Data Science, and Society (CDSS) at the University of California, Berkeley seeks applications for an Assistant Teaching Professor position in Data Science and Statistics. This position has the possibility of security of employment (equivalent to tenure).

The primary duties and responsibilities of an appointee to the position are pedagogical innovation, teaching and advising, and academic program development. Secondary responsibilities are professional and/or scholarly achievement and creative activities including those related to instruction and pedagogy. Therefore, the appointee is expected to demonstrate pedagogical excellence and innovation both in the classroom and in scholarly activities.

Since the formation of the Department of Statistics in 1955, its faculty and graduates have shaped the foundations and applications of Statistics. The Department currently has over 30 active research faculty, six of whom are members of the National Academy of Sciences: [Peter Bickel, Jennifer Chayes, Steven Evans, Michael Jordan, Rasmus Nielsen, Bin Yu]. It has been at the forefront of Data Science education, offering innovative undergraduate curricula and an open-source web-based interactive computing platform for research and instruction. CDSS also hosts an annual National Workshop on Data Science Education.
Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
Basic (required): PhD (or equivalent international degree) or enrolled in a PhD-generating program (or equivalent international program) at the time of application.
The successful candidate for an Assistant Teaching Professor position will preferably finish their PhD or equivalent degree within one year of their appointment’s expected start date. Applicants are expected to have demonstrated teaching and research potential. Serious consideration will be given to the candidate’s potential for pedagogical innovation, record in teaching at the undergraduate level, and potential for effective leadership.
