The Department of Biostatistics at Brown University School of Public Health is currently searching for Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor applicants on the Teaching Scholar Track. We seek exceptional candidates with a demonstrated commitment to statistical and health data science education and research, with interest or experience in innovative pedagogical methods including online and asynchronous teaching. We are particularly interested in applicants who would teach statistical theories (including biostatistics and data science); computing and programming methods; quantitative analysis methods (including study designs); modern big data and statistical learning techniques; and interdisciplinary education.
An appointment will be made at the level of Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor on a renewable term basis. These teaching scholars will support our new online MS (Spring 2025) as well as our traditional residential MS program through coursework and student mentorship. They also will have the opportunity to be involved with other Departmental graduate programs. An interest in scholarship related to public health education is also welcomed. It is not expected that the prospective candidate achieve independence as an investigator or maintain a portfolio of extramural funding.
The School of Public Health and the broader University offer opportunities for substantial collaboration with world class researchers and educators in the constituent disciplines of public health as well as in a broad range of related domain areas including engineering, medicine, sociology, and education. We provide extensive support for the design and implementation of residential and online educational programs. Brown Universityis an EEO/AA employer and encourages applications from minorities and women.
Candidates must show evidence of excellent oral and written communication skills and engagement with novel teaching methods. The Brown University School of Public Health teaches a growing number of students at both the undergraduate and the PhD levels, and candidates could become involved with instruction at these levels if appropriate. The School is committed to pursuing the goals of Brown University’sPathways to Diversity and Inclusioninitiative for diversity and inclusion. An important component of a candidate’s experience is dedication to supporting and leading inclusion and diversity efforts.
Candidates for Assistant Professor should have evidence of having served as a teaching assistant or other pedagogical experience, such as undergraduate mentorship. Experience in multidisciplinary educational programs, particularly online teaching, is preferred. Scholarship in pedagogy will be viewed favorably.
Applications will be reviewed beginning October 1, 2024, and continuing until the position is filled or the search is closed. Please apply online at apply.interfolio.com/143279. Please upload the following: a letter of application stating specific interest in the position, a description of teaching experience, a summary of teaching evaluations where applicable, a summary of current and planned research, and an updated curriculum vitae. In addition, applicants should arrange for at least three letters of recommendation to be uploaded to the online application. At least one of the letters should specifically address accomplishments and potential in teaching, education and leadership. Brown University is committed to increasing diversity and inclusion of underrepresented groups. If there is additional information not included in your research and teaching statements that might help to demonstrate your contribution and commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, we welcome you to share it in your cover letter. Full consideration will be given to all applications received by October 1, 2024. Applications received after the priority deadline may be reviewed until the position is filled or the search is closed.
For applicants to the Associate or Full Professor level, candidates should have a strong record as a teaching scholar with exceptional skills as an educator and a demonstration of a major teaching role in a graduate program or within a department. This may include primary leadership of a required course or substantial elective course offered annually or supervision of a Master’s degree program; leadership experience that incorporates online, innovative coursework is strongly preferred as is national engagement with public health pedagogy.
The new faculty member will also become a member of a highly interdisciplinary Biostatistics faculty in the Brown University School of Public Health. Building on its methodologic and domain research strength in the analysis of large health care databases, causal inference, diagnostic imaging evaluation and radiomics, computational biology and bioinformatics, Bayesian methodology, research synthesis, and neuroscience, the Department is now emphasizing growth in research and educational activity in health data science. Biostatistics is a core member of the University’s Data Science Initiative.
