The Division of Natural and Applied Sciences at Loyola University Maryland (LUM) invites applications for two tenure-track assistant professors to support growing programs in data science and environmental science. The new faculty will form an interdisciplinary cohort focused on increasing the success of women and other underrepresented groups in the STEM fields.

Faculty appointments for this cohort will be in the departments of mathematics and statistics, physics, or chemistry and biochemistry. 

Review of applications will begin on November 4th and will continue until the position is filled.

Position Duties

We seek an outstanding candidate with a background in statistics, mathematics, or physics who will teach courses in data science as well as courses in statistics, mathematics, or physics. Courses may include but are not limited to introductory courses in at least one of these fields as well as upper level and introductory courses in data science. The successful candidate will be able to develop courses that contribute to the data science programs.

We seek an outstanding candidate with a background in the physical sciences or mathematics who will teach courses in environmental science, including an introductory sequence for environmental studies students as well as courses in physics, mathematics, or chemistry. Courses will include but are not limited to introductory courses in at least one of these fields as well as upper level and introductory courses in environmental studies. The successful candidate will develop courses in their field appropriate for existing and potential environmental studies programs that focus on integral ecology and experiential learning.

The Natural and Applied Sciences offers interdisciplinary programs in Data Science (B.S. and M.S.) and Environmental Studies (minor) with the goal increasing enrollment in both programs and developing new STEM majors in alignment with our new strategic plan for 2030, Together We Rise. Successful candidates will also support majors in physics, chemistry, mathematics, or statistics based on their departmental appointment. Candidates should clearly indicate how they are prepared to contribute to teaching of courses in majors offered by one of the departments and one of the interdisciplinary programs.

• Ph.D. in a STEM field

• Published or soon to be published high quality research in a STEM field.

• Proposed research has the potential to engage undergraduate researchers & is appropriate for a PUI.

• Evidence of effective teaching and/or engagement in professional development in STEM pedagogy

• Evidence indicating a commitment to increasing the success of underrepresented groups in STEM

Data Science Candidate

• Academic training and/or scholarship in the field of data science or a closely related field.

• Academic training and/or scholarship in statistics, mathematics, or physics.

• Knowledge of relevant analytic software (e.g., R, SAS)

• Preferred departmental appointment: Mathematics & Statistics

Environmental Science Candidate

• Academic training and/or scholarship in environmental science or a closely related field.

• Academic training and/or scholarship in statistics, mathematics, physics, or chemistry.
