Applications and nominations are invited for the position of Chair of the Department of Statistics at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The position will be at the rank of Professor (full-time, tenured position).
The Department of Statistics at the University of Illinois is a vibrant and growing department with nearly 1,000 undergraduate majors, over 200 graduate students, and over 40 faculty members. The Department has a rich history of research in statistical theory, methodology, computation, machine learning, and interdisciplinary applications. As a leader in the fields of statistics and data science, the department collaborates with many campus partners such as the Siebel School of Computing and Data Science and School of Information Sciences and is a pillar of the University of Illinois Interdisciplinary Education in Data Science program. Champaign-Urbana is a lively, connected community with a metro area population of over 230,000, centrally located between Chicago, St. Louis, and Indianapolis.
The Chair is the chief executive officer and is expected to have a strategic vision and to provide leadership for the department and its faculty. The Chair is responsible for the recruitment of faculty and for personnel issues including promotion and tenure, and the evaluation of faculty. The Chair is also responsible for setting the department's budget and for the allocation of space. The Chair works with the department executive committee on all policy issues, especially faculty personnel issues. The Chair carries out the business of the Department by working with faculty and department administrative personnel, and with several major committees.
The Chair advocates for the department with the higher administration, particularly with the Dean of the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences and is the public face of the department. The Chair will also work with the alumni and stakeholders on a range of issues, including fundraising. Required qualifications: Must possess qualifications warranting an appointment as a tenurable Full Professor in the Department of Statistics; Ph.D. required.
Additional qualities expected: nationally and internationally recognized scholarship in a relevant field, demonstrated teaching competence, demonstrated experience in administration, service and leadership, strong interpersonal and communication skills, ability to articulate a vision for the department’s success, and a commitment to the department and College’s diversity and inclusion, teaching and research missions.
Appointment Information: This is a full-time nine-month (paid over twelve) faculty position that includes an administrative stipend and partial teaching release. The budgeted salary range for the position is $170-225,000, for a 9-month service basis. Target start date: August 16, 2025.
